Cold weather disrupts life in Nilphamari
Severe cold weather has gripped Nilphamari district, leaving people of all walks of life in distress. For the past three days, a relentless cold wave has brought life to a near standstill.
According to the Nilphamari District Weather Office, a mild to moderate cold wave is currently sweeping over the region and is expected to persist for the next few days. On Tuesday, the temperature dropped to 17°C.
Daily life has been severely disrupted, with low-income groups bearing the brunt of the harsh weather. Day laborers, rickshaw pullers, coolies, and hawkers are among those most affected.
“I am the sole breadwinner for my family, but I have not been able to go out with my rickshaw for the past few days,” said Israfil, 38, a rickshaw puller from Gajbari in Nilphamari Municipality. “My family is fasting because we have no income. I do not know how we will survive the coming days.”
The cold has also led to a significant rise in patients suffering from weather-related illnesses, particularly among the elderly and children.
Dr. Md. Hasibur Rahman, Civil Surgeon of Nilphamari, said, “Cold weather often brings common illnesses such as cough, asthma, fever, and diarrhea. We are seeing a noticeable increase in patients, both in our outdoor services and hospital admissions, compared to last week.”
Additionally, dense fog accompanying the cold weather has made travel increasingly hazardous. Drivers are being forced to move slowly to avoid accidents, further complicating the situation.
