8 alleged extortionists jailed in Khulna
A Khulna Court here today sent eight alleged extortionists to jail after rejecting their bail petitions in a case filed at Khalishpur Police Station. Khulna Metropolitan Magistrate Court passed the order as police produce the accused before the court, confirmed Khondokar Hossain Ahmmad, assistant commissioner (Media) of Khulna Metropolitan Police. The accused were identified as Abu Bakkar Siddique alias Raihan, S M Shamaum Ismam, Sohel Sheikh, Sheikh Sazzad, Naymur Rahman, Sheikh Rakibul Islam, Mohidul Islam Razon and Towhidul Islam Razon, all residents of different areas in Khulna city. According to police, the group went to the residence of Bappy Sarkar, son of Md Saheb Ali at Bastuhara Colony No. 2 Road in Khalishpur late last night. Later, the group accused Bappy of amassing wealth through illegal activities and possessing illegal firearms. They allegedly threatened Bappy with arrest by law enforcement agencies, claiming they were sent to investigate him. The group then demanded Tk 5 lakh in extortion, warning that if he failed to pay, he would be handed over to the authorities. When Bappy refused to pay, the group reportedly created a scene of intimidation. Police intervened after receiving information and rescued the suspects from potential mob violence. A case has been filed in connection with the incident at Khalishpur Police Station, police confirmed.
