Rushing elections could be dangerous: British MP Rupa Huq
British MP of Bangladeshi origin, Rupa Huq, criticized the recent 12th National Parliamentary Election, stating that holding elections hastily could be dangerous for Bangladesh. She made these remarks at a reception in Dhaka on Wednesday (January 9).
Rupa Huq emphasized that the UK desires a genuinely transparent election in Bangladesh, but necessary structural reforms must be in place. Hastily organized elections could pose risks for the country.
Reflecting on her previous visit to Bangladesh in May of the past year for a UN meeting, Rupa Huq noted, "Back then, I saw a 1.0 Bangladesh, and now I see a 2.0 Bangladesh. In May, the only images I saw everywhere were of Hasina and Mujib. This is not a good practice. I saw statues everywhere, which seemed odd. Bangladesh is an emerging country. Though smaller than the UK, it has a dynamic young workforce that should be utilized in state reform."
