One dies in fire at Old Dhaka shop
A 65-year-old man died and 17 others, including women and children, suffered injuries or fell sick after a fire broke out at a bedding store on Nazimuddin Road in the old part of Dhaka early today.
The deceased was identified as Amin Uddin, a manager of a nearby furniture shop, said police.
The fire originated at a bedding store on the ground floor of a five-storey building around 4:10am and later, spread to the furniture shop.
On information, seven firefighting units rushed to the spot and managed to douse the blaze after an hours effort, Md Shahjahan, duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence Control room.
Eighteen people were rescued from the building, of whom 12 received first aid on the spot. At least six were sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, he said.
Md Farouk, in-charge of the DMCH police outpost, confirmed that one of the injured had died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
The cause of the fire could not be known immediately.
Atiqur Rahman, owner of the furniture store named "Real Wood", said that three people — two managers and one staff member — were asleep inside his shop when the fire broke out. Among them, Amin Uddin fell seriously ill due to smoke inhalation and later passed away. Another employee was also fell sick and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Atiqur added that Amin Uddin was originally from Sharsha upazila in Jashore and used to sleep inside the furniture store. He had served as the manager of the shop for about three years.
