EC to appoint over 9 lakh polling officers for 12th JS election: secretary

Election Commission (EC) Secretary Md Jahangir Alam today said that the commission will recruit over nine lakh polling officers for the 12th Jatiya Sangsad (JS) elections to be held in late December this year or early January next year.
"Training will be imparted to these polling officials after announcing the election schedule," he told at a press briefing after an EC meeting at the Nirbachan Bhaban here with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal in the chair.
Training schedule for the officials to perform duty in the 12th parliamentary polls and other elections has been approved at the meeting, the EC secretary said, adding that training programme will begin from the first week of September this year.
Decision regarding preparing the panel for the polling officers will be taken later, Jahangir added.

Russia Luna-25 probe crashes on the Moon: Roscosmos

MOSCOW: The Luna-25 probe, Russia first Moon mission in almost 50 years, has crashed on the Moon after an incident during pre-landing manoeuvres, Russian space agency Roscosmos said on Sunday.
Communication with Luna-25 was lost at 2:57 pm (1157 GMT) on Saturday, Roscosmos said.
According to preliminary findings, the lander "has ceased to exist following a collision with the Moon surface", Roscosmos said.

52 companies apply for digital bank license

A total of 52 domestic and foreign companies have filed their applications for the license to set up digital banks.
The companies include commercial banks, mobile financial services (MFS), ride-sharing and food delivery service providers, IT service providers and pharmaceutical companies, Bangladesh Bank (BB) Spokesperson Md Mezbaul Haque said today.
The deadline for filing the applications ended on August 17.
The central bank invited applications for digital bank from the entrepreneurs from June 21 this year.
As per the Bangladesh Bank rule, investors willing to set up a digital bank will have to have a minimum paid-up capital of Taka 125 crore and the capital will have to come from the sponsors.
Any entity willing to set up a digital bank must be a public limited company. The minimum shareholding stake of each sponsor shall be Taka 50 lakh, according to the central bank.

Track car runs experimentally on Dhaka-Mawa rail route

MUNSHIGANJ: The test run of a track car was conducted successfully on the Dhaka-Mawa section of the Padma Bridge Rail Link Project today.
The track car started its journey at Gendaria in Dhaka railway station around 9:30am and reached Mawa around 11:15am.
On the way, the observation team in the track car observed the potential faults at various points and stations of the railway line established in the Dhaka-Mawa section.
At that time, Director General (DG) of Bangladesh Railway Md Kamrul Ahsan, project director Afzal Hosan and Project Manager Brigadier General Ahmed Jamiul Islam were present along with local and foreign engineers.
Later the track car left Mawa around noon for Bhanga.
