Iran rejects G7 calls to stop supporting Hamas

TEHRAN: Iran on Thursday rejected a G7 statement which called on Tehran to stop supporting Hamas militants and taking actions that "destabilise" the Middle East.
Tehran comment came a day after foreign ministers from the G7 group of advanced economies, meeting in Tokyo, expressed support for "humanitarian pauses and corridors" in the Israeli-Hamas war.
Israeli air strikes have pounded the Palestinian territory of Gaza since Hamas gunmen stormed across the heavily militarised border on October 7 to kill more than 1,400 people, most of them civilians, and seize around 240 hostages, according to Israeli officials.

Development of CWIT will support the growth of the Sri Lankan economy

Colombo: U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) has announced that it will be funding Colombo West International Terminal Pvt. Ltd. (CWIT) – a consortium of India's largest port operator Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd., Sri Lanka's leading enterprise John Keells Holdings (JKH) and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority – to the tune of USD 553 million.
DFC, the U.S. government’s development finance institution, partners with the private sector to finance solutions to the most critical challenges facing the developing world. It invests across sectors, including energy, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture and small business and financial services.
This is the first time that the U.S. government, through one of its agencies, is funding an Adani project, which is as a ringing endorsement of the Adani Group. It shows their confidence in the Group’s ability to invest and to create a world class container facility in Colombo Port.
“We welcome the association of the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), the U.S. government’s development finance institution, in funding the Adani project – and we see this as a reaffirmation by the international community of our vision, our capabilities and our governance,” said Mr Karan Adani, Whole Time Director and CEO, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone.
“As one of the world’s largest port developers and operators, APSEZ brings to this project not only our proven world-class expertise but also our deep experience in infrastructure creation. When completed, Colombo West International Terminal project will transform the socio-economic landscape, not just in Colombo but across the island, through thousands of direct and indirect new employment opportunities and by massively boosting Sri Lanka’s trade and commerce ecosystem.”

US, China hold rare talks on nuclear arms control

WASHINGTON: The United States and China on Monday held rare talks on nuclear arms control, a new step to ease mistrust ahead of an expected presidential summit next week.
The talks -- the first meeting specifically on nuclear arms between the two powers since president Barack Obama administration -- come as the United States voices alarm over China growing nuclear arsenal.
No breakthroughs were expected at the one-day talks in Washington, which follow a visit by Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Separatists kill around 20 in Cameroon attack: officials

YAOUNDE: Separatist rebels killed around 20 people, including women and children, on Monday in an attack on a village in one of Cameroon restive anglophone regions, security and local officials said.
The attack occurred in the village of Egbekaw in western Cameroon where rebels and government forces have clashed for seven years.
"The attack left around 20 dead, men, women and children, and 10 seriously injured people are in hospital," a senior regional administrative official said on condition of anonymity.
