UN chief urges efforts to avoid wider conflagration after attack on Israel

UNITED NATIONS, United States: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday urged diplomatic efforts in the Middle East in order to prevent the conflict from widening after Hamas attacks on Israel.
"The Secretary-General urges all diplomatic efforts to avoid a wider conflagration," Guterres said, adding that "only through negotiation leading to a two-state solution can peace be achieved."

EU foreign policy chief to visit China next week

BRUSSELS: EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell will head to China next week after his visit had been postponed twice this year, an EU official said Friday.
Borrell first pushed back the trip in April after testing positive for coronavirus and was then expected to go in July before China abruptly called off the visit.
The European Union top diplomat will be in China from October 12 to 14, the official said.

At least 23 Indian soldiers missing in flash flood

GUWAHATI, India: The Indian army said Wednesday that 23 soldiers were missing after a flash flood caused by intense rainfall tore through a valley in the mountainous northeast Sikkim state.
A video released by an Indian army spokesman showed a thick torrent of raging brown water sweeping down a thickly forested valley, with roads washed away and power lines ripped down.
"Due to sudden cloud burst over Lhonak Lake in North Sikkim, a flash flood occurred in the Teesta River... 23 personnel have been reported missing and some vehicles are reported submerged under the slush," the army said in a statement. "Search operations are underway."
