IOC suspends Russian Olympic Committee over Ukraine move

MUMBAI: The International Olympic Committee on Thursday suspended Russia national Olympic body with "immediate effect" for violating the territorial integrity of Ukraine membership by recognising illegally annexed territories.
The move comes after the Russian Olympic Committee recognised regional organisations from four Ukrainian territories that Russian has annexed since its invasion began in 2022.
"The Russian Olympic Committee is no longer entitled to operate as a National Olympic Committee, as defined in the Olympic Charter, and cannot receive any funding from the Olympic movement," IOC spokesman Mark Adams said after the opening day of an executive board meeting in Mumbai.

Indonesia in talks with Australia for 2034 World Cup bid: FA chief

JAKARTA: Indonesia is in talks with Australia for a possible joint 2034 World Cup bid, its football chief has said, despite the Asian confederation declaring its support for Saudi Arabia candidacy.
Global football body FIFA has invited bids from the Asia and Oceania regions for the rotating World Cup hosting rights after naming Morocco, Spain and Portugal as joint hosts for 2030.

Belgian football star Eden Hazard announces retirement

PARIS: Belgian attacking midfielder Eden Hazard announced his retirement on Tuesday after failing to find another club following his release by Real Madrid.
The 32-year-old endured an injury-plagued spell at Real Madrid after his 89-million-pound (103 million euros, $110 million) move from Chelsea in 2019, playing just 76 matches in all competitions across four seasons.
"You must listen to yourself and say stop at the right time," Hazard wrote on Instagram. "After 16 years and more than 700 matches played, I have decided to end my career as a professional footballer."
