Islamic banks must be operated by the people who founded those banks based on Shariah to serve financial inclusion for the ordinary people of the country, according to a prominent economist. Prof Abu Ahmed said this while speaking as the chief guest at a “customer rally” organised to protect Sharia-based Islamic banking, held in a hotel at Motijheel, Dhaka on Saturday. He said, “Islamic banks will be run well when they would be operated fully based on Shariah. On this aim these banks were established, but some people snatched it at gunpoint for looting money from these banks.” Economist Abu Ahmed said those who established Islami banks did not expect profit. A delegation of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), led by its president Mahbubul Alam, today made a courtesy call on Army Chief General Waker-uz-Zaman at the Army Headquarters here. Steel and iron industry leaders today (17 August) called for the removal of tariff complications in import of raw materials and capital equipment. At a meeting of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce & Industries (FBCCI) Standing Committee on Iron, Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel and Re-rolling Industries, they urged the interim government headed by Dr Muhammad Yunus to take necessary steps in this regard. Shomi Kaiser has resigned from her position as president of the e-Commerce Association of Bangladesh (e-CAB). She submitted her resignation letter to the executive council of e-CAB on the organisation letterhead on Tuesday, and requested immediate implementation. E-CAB Senior Vice President Mohammad Sahab Uddin confirmed the matter to The Shuttle Times on Wednesday, saying, “She [Shomi Kaiser] has resigned citing personal reasons. “In this regard, we will make a decision later after an executive committee meeting.
