    Lightning kills BNP leader in Kishoreganj
    A leader of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) died and two other farmers were injured after being struck by lightning in Pakundia upazila of the district today. The incident occurred around 7 am on Monday at Char Kawna Moishakanda area of Jangalia union in the upazila. The deceased was identified as Abu Taher Mia, 50, son of late Sirajul Islam of the area. According to locals, Taher Mia, a member of BNPs Jangalia Union Convener Committee, along with two farmers went to work in his vegetable garden early in the morning. Suddenly, rain accompanied by a storm began and they took shelter in a water pump house located on the land, they added. At that moment, lightning struck, killing Taher instantly at the scene and injuring two others. Confirming the matter, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Pakundia Police Station M Sakhawat Hossain said the body has been recovered and handed over to its family as there was no complaint.

    Four businesses fined for cheating in weight
    The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) today fined three meat shops for slaughtering cows in unhygienic conditions and deceiving customers by manipulating weights. A team of DNCRP with the assistance of joint forces conducted a drive at a market of the district town and fined Taka 26,000 to three shops owned by one Abdus Salam for slaughtering cows in unhygienic atmosphere. Besides, the team raided a fish market located in Fatepur Bazar and fined Taka 50,000 to a shop owner for cheating in weights.

    Life-term convict arrested in Satkhira
    The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested a life-term convict who had been remained absconding for 11 years, in a case filed under the Narcotic Control Act. The arrestee was identified as Ariful Islam Rasel, son of Esa Ali Sardar of Gunakorkati village under Assasuni upazila of the district. Acting on a tip-off, a RAB team conducted a raid in the area and arrested Ariful Islam Rasel from the Boalia area under Paikgachha Police Station in Khulna district on Sunday, according to a press release issued today. The arrestee has been handed over to Assasuni Police Station for taking further legal action. A case was filed against Ariful under Narcotics Control act with Rajbari Sadar Police Station as he was arrested while transporting drugs in 2013. He was released on bail, but since then he had remained absconding. Later, the court sentenced him, in absentia, to life-term imprisonment.

    One killed in Tongi road accident
    A man was killed in a road accident in the Panir Tanki area along the Tongi-Kamarpara road of the district. The deceased was Alamgir, 52, a resident of Nazirpur upazila of Pirojpur district. The accident occurred when a sand-laden truck and a timber-laden truck collided head on, leaving sand-laden truck helper dead on the spot. Police arrested the truck driver and seized the truck.
