    Cold weather disrupts life in Nilphamari
    Severe cold weather has gripped Nilphamari district, leaving people of all walks of life in distress. For the past three days, a relentless cold wave has brought life to a near standstill.
    According to the Nilphamari District Weather Office, a mild to moderate cold wave is currently sweeping over the region and is expected to persist for the next few days. On Tuesday, the temperature dropped to 17°C.
    Daily life has been severely disrupted, with low-income groups bearing the brunt of the harsh weather. Day laborers, rickshaw pullers, coolies, and hawkers are among those most affected.
    “I am the sole breadwinner for my family, but I have not been able to go out with my rickshaw for the past few days,” said Israfil, 38, a rickshaw puller from Gajbari in Nilphamari Municipality. “My family is fasting because we have no income. I do not know how we will survive the coming days.”
    The cold has also led to a significant rise in patients suffering from weather-related illnesses, particularly among the elderly and children.
    Dr. Md. Hasibur Rahman, Civil Surgeon of Nilphamari, said, “Cold weather often brings common illnesses such as cough, asthma, fever, and diarrhea. We are seeing a noticeable increase in patients, both in our outdoor services and hospital admissions, compared to last week.”
    Additionally, dense fog accompanying the cold weather has made travel increasingly hazardous. Drivers are being forced to move slowly to avoid accidents, further complicating the situation.

    Voter iist update begins
    A meeting was held at the Bera Upazila Parishad on Monday to discuss the voter list update campaign. The program, which commenced on the same day, will continue until February 3, 2025.
    As part of the campaign, information collectors appointed by the Election Commission will visit every household to gather necessary documents. These include a 17-digit online birth certificate, a copy of the national ID card, a recent photograph, proof of close blood relation, an education certificate, and a copy of a utility bill.
    Authorities have issued a reminder that each person is allowed to register on the voter list only once to ensure transparency and avoid duplication.
    The meeting was presided over by Md. Murshidul Islam, UNO of Bera Upazila, and conducted by the Upazila Election Officer. Prominent attendees included Md. Abdul Hannan, President of Bera Press Club; Fazlur Rahman Fakir, President of Bera Poura BNP; local elites; the Principal of Bera Technical College; and many others who addressed the gathering.

    Mobile court fines fuel shop owner for cheating customers
    A mobile court was conducted at Nagarbari Ghat in Bera Upazila on January 15, 2025, at 5:00 PM. The operation was led by Md. Morshidul Islam, Executive Magistrate and UNO of Bera Upazila, along with Utpol Kumar, Inspector of BSTI, Pabna.
    During the inspection, the team discovered that Md. Nazmul Islam (42), son of Md. Manik Sk and a resident of Nagarbari Ghat, was delivering fuel in lower quantities than advertised at his fuel shop by tampering with the dispensing system.
    Md. Morshidul Islam fined Md. Nazmul Islam Tk. 50,000 under Section 46 of the Weights and Measures Act, 2018. The operation was part of an effort to ensure fair practices in trade and protect consumer rights.

    Annual prize giving ceremony held
    The Annual sports, cultural competition and prize giving ceremony were held in Nilphamari Govt. Women College on Tuesday morning.
    Principal of the College Professor Md. Obaidul Anwar presided over the function while Director of Secondary & Higher Education, Rangpur Region and Professor Md. Amir Ali attended the function as the chief guest.
    Among others, Nilphamari Govt. Women College Vice-Principal Professor Mohammad Shahojahan, Nilphamari Govt. College Principal Professor Md. Mahabubur Rahman, Professor Elias Ahmed, Moshiur Rahman Degree College Principal Md. Sohidul Islam, Nilphamari Govt. Women College Ex- Principal Riziwana were present there as the special guest. Professor Mohammad Shahojahan delivered the welcome speech.
    Assistant Professor of Bangla Department Juwel Islam and Assistant Professor of History Department Azijur Rahman Tota conducted the whole program jointly. All the college staff, employees and students attended the programme spontaneously.
    Professor Md. Amir Ali Said, “Only traditional education does not make a student perfect at the present competitive world. So, co-curriculum activities are very important to make sure her competent. A student should come forward to play Football, Cricket, recite poem and sing song.
    ” Professor Obaidul Anwar said, “Our College has a reputation of conducting such kinds of programs. I believe these programs will make the students fit for the competitive world. This tradition of arranging programs will be held next year also.”
