NEW YORK: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has signed the Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) to protect the world oceans and rivers from the damage due to fragile marine environment by overfishing and other human activities.
The agreement was signed on Wednesday under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea at the Ground Floor, General assembly Building, Treaty Event area here, said Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen while briefing newsmen about the Prime Minister engagements on the sidelines of the 78th UNGA session.
The treaty gave consent to management and preservation of the genetic resources describing those as the common heritage.

Biden hosted the banquet at The Metropolitan Museum of Art here in the evening in honor of the heads of state and government who arrived in New York to take part in the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Session.
Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen informed newsmen about the reception at a press briefing on the Prime Minister engagements here.

The Ministry of Commerce has given permission to some 79 enterprises to export some 3,950 metric tons (MTs) of Hilsha to neighboring India ahead of the Durga Puja.
The Ministry issued permission in this regard today and thus sent a letter to the Office of Chief Controller of Imports and Exports. Each of the 79 exporting enterprises would be able to export 50 metric tons of Hilsha.
Talking to this correspondent, additional secretary of the Ministry of Commerce and chief of the export wing, Md Abdur Rahim Khan said, "India is our closest and a friendly neighbor. They are also a big trade partner of ours. So, like the previous years, permission has been given this time also to export Hilsha to India ahead of the Durga Puja."
President Mohammed Shahabuddin today reiterated his call to the global community to urgently act for solving Rohingya issue as he opened 7th Partnership Meeting-2023 of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) in a city hotel.
"Bangladesh is hosting around 1.2 million forcibly displaced Myanmar people with shelter, food and other necessities . . . . I call upon the international community to urgently act on the issue," he said.
The President said it is imperative to understand that the burden of this issue (Rohingya influx) should not fall solely upon Bangladesh shoulder.
