UN HR Chief Volker Türk arrives tomorrow

United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk will arrive here tomorrow on a two-day official visit as he will hold a number of meetings with top government officials and civil society representatives.
During the visit, the high commissioner is scheduled to meet with Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus, said a press release disseminated by the UN Resident Coordinator office in Dhaka today.
The UN HR chief will also hold meetings with a number of advisers for different ministries, the chief justice, the army chief and the heads of several reform commissions.
Türk will also make an address at Dhaka University, where he will meet with the students involved in the recent protest movement.

India opens integrated check post, terminal at Petrapole

India today opened an integrated check post, passenger terminal building and a joint cargo gate named Maitri Dwar at the Petrapole in West Bengal to improve cross-border trade and immigration infrastructure.
Indian Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the Passenger Terminal Building and Maitri Dwar at the land port, said a press release disseminated by the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.
The Petrapole (India)- Benapole (Bangladesh) Land Port is one of the most important land border crossings for the two countries, both in terms of trade and passenger movement.
In his remarks, Shah said that the Land Port Authority of India (LPAI) is making a significant contribution to country development, along with improving relations with neighbours, and facilitating the exchange of language, culture, and literature.

ICT shows arrested 20 ex-ministers, secretaries, security officers

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) today showed 20 former ministers, advisers, secretaries and security forces officials arrested, allowing two separate pleas of the prosecution.
The three-judge panel of the ICT led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, passed the orders this afternoon.
"We moved three separate applications today. Of the three, two were for showing total 20 people, who have already been arrested in other cases and are now behind bars, arrested in cases lodged under the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT). Under one petition, the court showed 14 people, including Anisul Huq, Faruk Khan, Dr Dipu Moni, Rashed Khan Menon, Hasanul Haque Inu, Zunaid Ahmed Palak, Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, Salman F Rahman, Mohammad Abdur Razzaque, Shajahan Khan, Kamal Ahmed Mazumder, Golam Dastagir Gazi, AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and former home secretary Md Jahangir Alam arrested. The court ordered to produce them before it on November 18," ICT chief prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam said.

CJ sends proposal to govt for separate secretariat for judiciary

Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed today sent a proposal to the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, recommending establishing a separate secretariat for the judiciary.
Supreme Court administration in a press release said the chief justice had earlier made the proposal in his speech on September 21 while addressing all judges, lawyers and judicial officials from across the country at the Inner Garden of the Supreme Court here.
The chief justice in his speech announced zero tolerance against corruption in the judiciary, stressing the need for formulating a roadmap to regain the public confidence through establishing transparency and integrity in the judicial process.
