Home Affairs adviser of the interim government Brigadier General (Retired) M Sakhawat Hussain today announced “Thursday” as the deadline for policemen to report to their workplaces, warning that the absentees would be considered “not willing” to continue in service and sought peoples cooperation for them understanding the force necessity. “Thursday is the deadline,” he told a media briefing at his Bangladesh secretariat office hours after visiting wounded policemen at Central Police Hospital at Rajarbabgh as the main law enforcement agency was in disarray after the fall of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina government. The government has formed a seven member committee today (11 August) to investigate the country internet blackout in mid-July during student protests which turned into a mass uprising, toppling the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government. Additional Secretary AKM Amirul Islam, telecom wing head at the Posts and Telecommunications Division, will lead the committee that includes six other telecom officials of the government various entities. President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Saturday appointed Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed as the 25th chief justice after a day-long drama. Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, senior most judge of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court, was first appointed as judge of the Appellate Division and then appointed as chief justice, Law Secretary Md Golam Sarwar told The Shuttle Times. Firstly, Appellate Division Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam has been appointed as the acting chief justice after Obaidul Hassan resigned from his position on Saturday. The Supreme Court Public Relations Officer Md Shafiqul Islam confirmed to the media. In 1983, Ashfaqul Islam began his career as a lawyer in the District Court, and by 1985, he had advanced to become a lawyer in the Supreme Court High Court Division. The appointment came after Obaidul Hassan stepped down from his post of chief justice. His decision came following a protest on Saturday morning from students, who issued an ultimatum to him and judges of the Appellate Division to resign by 1:00pm. Out of 639 police stations located throughout Bangladesh, 538 have resumed their activities. The Police Headquarters relayed this information on Saturday afternoon. According to a press release, until 3pm on Saturday, 538 out of 639 police stations across the country resumed operations. Among those, 84 out of 110 metropolitan police stations and 454 out of 529 district police stations have resumed operations. Read More...
