Bangladesh Bank (BB) has dissolved the board of directors of the Social Islami Bank Limited (SIBL). The central bank has also formed a new board for SIBL with the appointment of five independent directors at the Shariah-based lender, according to a letter issued by the central bank Sunday. Major (retd) Dr Md Rezaul Haque, the bank founding shareholder, has been appointed as the director of the new board. The four independent directors are - Maksuda Begum, a former executive director of the Bangladesh Bank, Dr M Sadiqul Islam, a professor at the Department of Finance at Dhaka University, Md Morshed Alam Khandkar, a former deputy managing director of Rupali Bank, and Chartered Accountant Md Anwar Hossain. The Anti-Corruption Commission has decided to launch an investigation against former textiles and jute minister Golam Dastagir Gazi and two others over allegations of corruption. The two others to be investigated are former cabinet secretary Kabir Bin Anwar and former member of parliament from Barguna-1 constituency Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu. Eighteen people died and over 49 lakh people have been affected as the ongoing flood hit 77 upazilas in 11 districts of the country. Among the deaths, four were in Cumilla, one in Feni, five in Chattogram, three in Noakhali, one in Brahmanbaria, one in Lakshmipur and three were in Coxs Bazar districts, according to latest updates on the ongoing flood issued by the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry. Feni, Cumilla, Khagrachhari, Noakhali, Chattogram, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Sylhet, Lakshmipur and Coxs Bazar districts have been affected in the ongoing flood since August 20. A total of 9,44,548 families have been stranded in the flood while 2,84,888 people and 21,695 cattle were given shelter to 3,527 shelter centers. The flood hit 587 unions and municipalities under 77 upazilas of 11 districts. Taka 3,52,00,000 (cash), 20,150 metric tons of rice and 15,000 packets of dry foods have been allocated for the 11 flood-hit districts. Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Adviser Md Nahid Islam today directed the telecom regulator to provide free diesel for the generators to keep the mobile network tower operational in Feni district. "In the absence of electricity, a good quantity of diesel is required to keep the 78 mobile network towers in Feni district operational. So, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has been instructed to provide free diesel to the generators deployed in the district by mobile operators to keep the network towers operational," he said. In this context of flood situation, it is very important to ensure uninterrupted mobile phone communication for the people of affected areas, he added, according to a press release of the ministry. The release said portable generator (PG) (75 KV) consumes 2.3 liters of diesel per hour, while generator (DG) (30 KV) consumes 4.4 liters of diesel per hour. So, in total 6,552 liters of diesel is used daily in the 78 generators which is worth Taka 7,14,168, while 45,864 liters in 7 days requiring Taka 49,99,176. Read More...
