Labour and Employment Secretary AHM Shafiquzzaman said on Sunday that the ongoing labour unrest at Beximco industrial group will be resolved once an administrator takes full control. “We will soon appoint an administrator at Beximco,” he told a press conference at the Bangladesh Secretariat. The press conference was arranged to brief journalists about the activities of the Youth and Sports Ministry and the Labour and Employment Ministry during the 100 days of the interim government. The government has extended the magistracy power given to commissioned army officers for another two months (60 days). The public administration ministry, in a circular issued on Friday, said officers on deputation in Bangladesh Coast Guard and Border Guard Bangladesh will also be able to exercise the magistracy power. Their jurisdiction for exercising magistracy power will be across the country, the circular said, adding that the 60-day countdown will start from the circular issuance date. Bangladesh Bank (BB) Governor Dr Ahsan H Mansur has said that the banking sector requires drastic reforms, describing it as the backbone of the financial sector. Speaking as the chief guest at the Mastercard Excellence Awards 2024 held at a hotel on Saturday evening, the governor acknowledged past irregularities in the sector and the central bank shortcomings in regulatory affairs. He, however, assured that drastic reforms would be implemented to ensure fairness and restore trust. “Irregularities happened in banks for a long period with state sponsors. Distinguished Fellow of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya has alleged that people with vested interests had been strategically placed within Bangladesh Bank (BB) to serve the interest of particular groups. “They printed money, showed fake reserves. A person who is not qualified to run a bank was allowed to do so,” said Dr Debapriya, who also heads the government-formed White Papers Publishing Committee on Corruption.
