BB plans to merge 10 banks in a year

Bangladesh Bank (BB) Executive Director and Spokesperson Mezbaul Haque today informed that the regulator is planning to merge 10 banks within a year.
“Following the merger, the weak bank can become the strong bank while strong banks can be stronger banks,” he told reporters in a press briefing at BB headquarters in the city.
Mezbaul Haque said BB various departments assess different components regularly for financial risk management.
But it is not a real health indicator, he added.
He said, "We developed a Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) framework to classify banks. As a result, banks will be evaluated in four categories. This will be done based on the balance sheet of 2024. It will be implemented from May 2025."

Holy Ramadan begins

The holy month of Ramadan of 1445 Hijri will begin in the country tomorrow as the new moon was sighted in the sky of Bangladesh today.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee at the conference room of Islamic Foundation (IF) at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque here this evening, said a press release.
Religious Affairs Minister and National Moon Sighting Committee President Faridul Haque Khan presided over the meeting.

TCB, Russia Prodintorg sign MoU to import essential items

The state-run Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) and the JSC Foreign Economic Corporation Prodintorg under the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to import essential items.
TCB Chairman Brigadier General M Ariful Hasan and General Director of Prodintorg Andrey Golovanov inked the instrument on behalf of their respective sides at the commerce ministry conference room at Bangladesh Secretariat, said an official release.
State Minister for Commerce Ahasanul Islam Titu, Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander Mantysky, Commerce Ministry senior Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh and high officials concerned were present, among others, on the occasion.
