Teesta flowing above danger mark in greater Rangpur

RANGPUR: The Teesta crossed its danger mark (DM) at Kawnia and Dalia points in greater Rangpur district creating a temporary flood satiation due to huge onrush of water from upstream during the last 24 hours ending at 9 am today.
Officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said intensity of monsoon rains lessened in the upstream northwestern Indian states from today creating a possibility of no further deterioration of the situation during the next 24 hours.
"The Teesta was flowing above its danger mark by 41 cm at Kawnia point in Rangpur and 7cm at Dalia point in Nilphamari respectively at 9 am today," said Additional Chief Engineer for Rangpur Zone of BWDB Engineer Md Mahbubur Rahman.
Currently, all 44 gates of the Teesta Barrage Project are remaining open to control the huge water flow at Dalia point in Nilphamari where the river was flowing below its danger mark by 27cm at 3pm today.

Hundreds of Rohingyas hold rally, demand safe repatriation

KUTUPALANG, Coxs Bazar: Hundreds of forcibly displaced Rohingyas today held rallies at different camps here marking the sixth anniversary of their huge exodus, demanding safe return to their homeland Myanmar.
"We do not want to stay in Bangladesh any long. Our only demand is to quick return to our homeland Myanmar," said Musa, a representative of Rohingyas at a camp.
Since August 25 in 2017, Bangladesh has been hosting over 1.1 million forcefully displaced Rohingyas in Coxs Bazar district and most of them arrived there after a military crackdown by Myanmar, which the UN called a "textbook example of ethnic cleansing" and other rights groups dubbed it as "genocide".

Xi, Modi hold rare sitdown for China-India border talks

BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held "candid and in-depth" talks to ease tensions along their disputed frontier, Beijing said Friday, after a rare face-to-face encounter between the two leaders.
Relations between the world two most populous countries have been in deep freeze since a deadly Himalayan border clash that killed 20 Indian soldiers and at least four Chinese troops in 2020.
Tens of thousands of soldiers have since been massed along both sides of the border. They remain despite 19 rounds of talks between top military officials of both countries.

Xi assures Bangladesh of support in joining BRICS, solving Rohingya issue

JOHANNESBURG: Chinese President Xi Jinping assured that his country will always stay beside Bangladesh in its needs including providing support in joining the BRICS and ensuring permanent solution to the Rohingya issue.
"I will always support you (Sheikh Hasina) as you can join the BRICS," Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen quoted Xi as telling Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a bilateral talks on the sidelines of the 15th BRICS Summit.
The Chinese president also said, "China will help Bangladesh bring a permanent solution to the Rohingya issue---we do not want instability in the region".
After the meeting at the Hotel Hilton Sandton here last (Wednesday) evening, Momen said in a media briefing that Xi wants to resolve the Rohingya issue through tripartite engagement of China, Bangladesh and Myanmar.
According to Momen, the Bangladesh premier said her government wants to repatriate Rohingyas to their homeland citing that the displaced Myanmar nationals are becoming threats for the regional peace as many of them are engaged in illegal drugs and arms trading.
