A Cumilla court sentenced six individuals to death and ten others to life imprisonment on Wednesday for the 2011 murder of social worker Nurul Haque. The verdict was delivered by Judge Jahangir Hossain of the Cumilla Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-4. The six individuals sentenced to death are Md Masum (35), Md Quaiyum (28), Tajul Islam (32), Md Mustafa (24), Md Quaiyum (25), and Md Tabdul Hossain (40). Those sentenced to life imprisonment are Md Nanu Mia (40), Matin Mia (40), Saidul Islam (24), Babul Mia (25), Shafiqul Islam (35), Md Shafiqul Islam (28), Moslem Mia (45), Helal Mia (25), Billal Hossain (30), and Abdul Awal (30). The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) organized a validation workshop on the Priority Investment Plan-Crop Sector (PIP-CS:2024-2030) where key areas for potential investment in the crop sector were presented. The workshop brought together multiple stakeholders including private sector, development partners, government, researcher, academia and civil society organizations. Teachers of Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU) observed a half-day work abstention on Wednesday demanding the withdrawal of the notification issued by Ministry of Finance on the universal pension scheme. Besides, they formed a human chain in front of the Bangabandhu Mural under the initiative of the University Teachers Association. Chaired by Prof. Dr. Mohammad Shafi Ullah Bhuiyan, president of the University Teachers Association, the human chain program was conducted by its general secretary Dr. Muhammad Al Mamun. The government of Japan will provide an amount of 495 million Japanese Yen (equivalent to approximately Taka 35.25 crore or $3.21 million) for the project titled The Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS). In this regard, Exchange of Notes and Grant Agreement were signed today between the Government of Bangladesh and Japan. Md. Shahriar Kader Siddiky, Secretary, Economic Relations Division (ERD), Ministry of Finance has signed the Exchange of Notes and Grant Agreement on behalf of the Government of Bangladesh.
