Vegetable prices soar in Dhaka as Ramadan begins

The first day (Sunday) of Ramadan saw a sharp rise in vegetable prices across the capital, with essentials such as aubergine, cucumber and lemon reaching record-high rates.
A visit to several markets in Dhaka revealed that the price of aubergine, which was Tk 60-80 per kg just a few days ago, has now surged to Tk 100-120 per kg.
Speaking to UNB, Abu Salam, a vegetable vendor at Malibagh market, said, "Prices of vegetables tend to be higher during the initial days of Ramadan, but they are expected to stabilise soon."
Lemon prices have also skyrocketed. Previously selling at Tk 20-40 per four-piece unit, they are now being sold at Tk 80-120 per unit, depending on the variety. Elachi lemons are priced at Tk 70-80 per unit, Kagzi lemons at Tk 80-90, and Sharbat lemons at Tk 100-120.

Islami Bank Grahak Forum demands bank handover to founding entrepreneurs

Islami Bank Grahak Forum (IBGF) on Sunday demanded that Islami Bank be returned to its founding directors to restore customer trust.
At a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club, the forum said that the current management has failed to operate the bank in a customer-friendly manner, leading to difficulties for many businesses in securing working capital loans and investments.
As a result, the production sector is facing significant hurdles in opening letters of credit (LCs), while Islami Bank continues to pay around Tk 14,000 crore in deferred LC liabilities linked to S. Alam Group beneficiaries.
Prominent businessman Abdul Hoque, convenor of IBGF, and Abul Kashem Haider, joint convenor and chairman of Islamic Finance and Investment PLC, addressed the event.

Voters in Bangladesh now stand at 123.7 million: CEC

The total number of voters in the country now stands at 123,732,274, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin announced on Sunday.
The CEC disclosed the updated statistics while inaugurating a vibrant rally in front of Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital, marking National Voter Day 2025.
As per tradition, the final updated voter list is published on March 2 every year, coinciding with the observance of National Voter Day. However, this year voter list updating process, which began on January 20, is still going on.

European Commissioner Hadja Lahbib in city

European Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib is now visiting Bangladesh.
The Commissioner, now visiting the Rohingya camp in Coxs Bazar, is scheduled to meet Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Monday noon.
She will attend a book launching programme titled “Bangladesh, 36 July 2024” in a city park on Monday afternoon.
The European Commissioner will meet Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after attending the book launching event, officials told UNB.
