The leaders of the quota protest movement have announced the suspension of their activities following the government decision to address their demands. In a video message released on Sunday, key figures including Md Nahid Islam, Md Sajin Alam, Hasnat Abdullah, Md Abu Baker, Asif Mahmud, and Nusrat Tabbassum confirmed the cessation of their protest activities. The quota protest movement, which had sparked widespread nationwide demonstrations, had unfortunately also led to incidents of vandalism, causing damage to public property and disruptions to daily life. Despite government claims of 10,000 MW renewable energy projects in various stages of implementation, a Power Cell document indicates that only 4,000 MW worth of projects are fully planned by 2030. According to the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA), Bangladesh currently produces 1,374.35 MW from renewable sources, with 230 MW from hydropower and 1,080.36 MW from solar energy. Power Cell documents, reviewed by the media, show that projects totalling 3,963.5 MW are at different implementation stages. Specifically, 943.5 MW of projects are under construction, 609 MW have received letters of intent (LOI) or notifications of award (NOA), 228 MW are in the tendering process, and 2,183 MW remain in the planning stage. The renovation works of the aging Kalurghat Bridge in Chattogram will be completed within this month. Railway official sources said the renovation works on Kalurghat Bridge that was started on 1st August in 2023 and it will be completed this month. “The carpeting works on the Khalurghat Bridge is almost completed. Construction works of the walkway added to the bridge for the first time has been completed. So, the bridge is now ready for traffic movement.” sources said.
