7964 stranded workers to go Malaysia in 1st phase, MoFA

A total of 7,964 Bangladeshi workers, among the 18,000, who could not travel to Malaysia as of May 31 last year, have been selected for entry into the Southeast Asian nation in the first phase, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) confirmed today.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mohammad Rafiqul Alam shared the information during the ministry weekly media briefing this afternoon.
He said that on December 5, 2024, Bangladesh High Commissioner in Malaysia held a meeting with Malaysian Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail in Kuala Lumpur.

Luxury cars of 24 former AL MPs put up for auction Ctg

The Chattogram Customs House authorities have launched an online auction of 44 vehicles, including 24 luxurious cars imported by former members of parliament (MPs) of the ousted Awami League (AL) government under duty-free privileges.
The auction process began today and will remain open for bidders till 2:00 pm on February 16 and the money from the sale of these high-CC cars will be deposited in the government treasury.
Bijon Kumar Talukder, Revenue Officer of Chattogram Customs, said the interested parties can view the auction catalogue on the e-auction website from today.

Govt urges Canada to expedite visa processing for Bangladeshi nationals

Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain today urged Canada to expedite visa processing for Bangladeshi nationals with a particular focus on students.
The issues were discussed when newly-appointed High Commissioner of Canada to Bangladesh Ajit Singh paid a courtesy call on him at the foreign ministry today, said a press release.
During the meeting, they had elaborate discussions on key issues, including agricultural cooperation, trade and investment, the financial sector and the Rohingya crisis.
The Foreign Adviser mentioned the daunting challenges faced by Bangladesh in hosting around 1.3 million Rohingyas and sought international cooperation, including Canada strong support for their sustainable repatriation to Myanmar.

Electoral reforms must be done by Oct for polls in Dec

Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin has said the reform of electoral laws and rules and other necessary works must be completed by October next to hold the 13th parliamentary election in December next.
“To conduct the election in December, I have to be fully prepared with everything by October, completing whatever necessary (for the election). I have to announce the schedule at the end of October,” he said on Sunday.
The CEC made the remark while addressing a dialogue titled RFED Talk with Reporters Forum for Election and Democracy-RFED at Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital.
He said the election commission needs to announce the election schedule at least two months or one and half a month before an election.
