PM reiterates commitment to hold free, fair election

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today reiterated her commitment to hold next polls in a free and fair manner as visiting State Secretary for International Development Cooperation of Sweden Foreign Ministry Diana Janse called on her at her office here.
"We are committed to holding the next general election in a free and fair manner," PM Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim quoted her as saying in a media briefing after the meeting.
According to Karim, the Swedish state minister said they wanted a free and fair election in Bangladesh.

Currently no chance of prisoner swap with Israel: Hamas official

Palestinian Islamist group Hamas is not open to negotiating a prisoner exchange with Israel during hostilities, a member of the militants political office in Doha said Monday.
"The military operation is still continuing... therefore there is currently no chance for negotiation on the issue of prisoners or anything else," Hossam Badran, a Hamas official, told AFP from Doha.
"Our mission now is to make every effort to prevent the occupation from continuing to commit massacres against our people in Gaza, which directly target civilian homes," he added.

Normalcy returns to the people of Teesta basin in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA: Normalcy has returned to the people of Teesta river basin areas of four northern districts including Gaibandha. Like the previous time, they started living normal life in the river basin.
Official sources here today said, a hydroelectric dam has collapsed in Sikkim, a state of India on Wednesday due to flood caused by heavy rainfall. As a result, the floodwater came to Bangladesh through the Teesta River in India.
At one stage, the floodwater entered into Bangladesh territory through Gazoldoba Bridge at Jalpaiguri of West Bengal.

Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Komura Masahiro today said his country wants dignified return of forcibly displaced Rohingyas to their homeland Myanmar as he called on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganabhaban here.
"Japan wants dignified return of forcibly displaced Rohingyas to their homeland Myanmar," PM Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim quoted Masahiro as saying in a media briefing after the meeting.
According to Karim, the Japanese vice minister said Tokyo also wants to assist local people of Coxs Bazar who are suffering numerous difficulties due to the presence of huge number of Myanmar nationals Rohingyas there.
