Monthly inflation surged to a 12-year high of 11.66 per cent in July, which is a significant increase from June 9.72 per cent. According to data released by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), the inflation was mainly driven by the food item price. Food inflation reached a record high of 14.10 per cent in July, while non-food inflation stood at 9.68 per cent. In comparison, these figures were 10.42 per cent and 9.15 per cent respectively in June. The previous peak for inflation was 9.94 per cent in May. The general point-to-point inflation both in the urban and rural areas also increased last month. In July, Bangladesh experienced significant civil unrest centring widespread protests. Sixty-eight state law officers out of 207, including the attorney general appointed by Sheikh Hasina-led government, have resigned from the offices in the last seven days. Among them, Senior Advocate AM Amin Uddin resigned from the post of the attorney general on August 7. Advocate Sk Md Morshed stepped down from the post of additional attorney general on August 6, a day after Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country. Soldiers will return to barracks once police resume normal operations, Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman said on Monday. The Army Chief said this while responding to journalists at Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in Khulna this afternoon. He also said that there is positive improvement in the law and order situation in the country. “If the situation continues to improve, all regular forces will carry out their counter-terrorism operations,” He said that 30 crimes against the minority communities have been committed in 20 districts of the country. Army Task Force representative Lt. Col. Mahfuz said that the army would be proactive in ensuring a secure environment for factories in the industrial areas. The Army Task Force hoped that all industrial establishments, including Gazipur garment factories, and law enforcement forces would collaborate to restore normal production conditions and improve overall law and order.
