HC issues rule on unused mobile data, minutes, and SMS carryover

The High Court (HC) on Sunday issued a rule asking the authorities concerned why unused mobile internet data, minutes, and SMS should not be carried over to the next purchased package.
The High Court bench of Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Sikder Mahmudur Razi issued the order following a preliminary hearing of a writ filed in public interest.
The posts and telecommunications secretary, the chairman of the BTRC, and other authorities concerned have been asked to respond within four weeks.

Over 1.4 million taxpayers filed returns online: NBR

Over 1.4 million taxpayers have filed their income tax returns online this fiscal year and over 1.8 million have registered for the National Board of Revenue (NBR) e-return system.
The National Board of Revenue online income tax return filing system has received a huge response from taxpayers, according to a NBR press release.
NBR also announced that the online filing service will remain available round the year even after the Income Tax Day on February 16.
Taxpayers filing returns after the deadline will not be eligible for investment tax rebates or exemptions under Section 76 of the Income Tax Act, 2023, it said.

11 of a family, including 4 children, burnt in gas cylinder explosion

At least 11 members of a family, including four children, suffered different levels of burns in a fire that started after a gas cylinder exploded inside a flat in Dhaka Ashulia area last night (14 February).
According to the victims and locals, the incident happened at a residential building owned by Amzad Bepari in the Gomail area of Ashulia at around 9:30pm.
Locals rescued the injured and immediately took them to Ashulia Women and Children Hospital. After receiving first aid there, they were all shifted to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
The victims have been identified as Surjo Banu, 55, Zahura Begum, 70, Md Monir Hossain, 43, Sohel Rana, 38, Sumon Mia, 30, Shiuli Akhtar, 25, Sharmin, 25, Samin Mahmud, 15, Mahadi, 7, Swaed, 4, and Suraha, 3.
Talking to reporters, Sohel said his brother Sumon lived in the rented flat on the first floor with his wife and children. Yesterday evening, he went to Sumon home with his family and other relatives on the occasion of holy Shab-e-Barat.

The holy Shab-e-Barat, the night of fortune and forgiveness, was observed in Bangladesh on Friday with religious fervour.
Shab-e-Barat is observed on the 15th night of the Arabic month of Shaban. Shab-e-Barat is regarded as a significant occasion during which Muslims pray to Allah and beg for forgiveness for their transgressions.
It is thought to absolve them of their sins and bestow upon them good fortune for the entire year.
Muslim devotees offered special prayers and recited from the Holy Quran seeking divine blessings for the wellbeing of mankind and to save people from the fatal onslaught of the coronavirus pandemic.
