Dr Yunus gets 6-month jail for violating labour law

A labour court ¦here today convicted and sentenced Grameen Telecom Chairman and Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus and three others to six-month jail in a case filed against them for violating labour law.
Judge Sheikh Merina Sultana of Dhaka 3rd Labour Court pronounced the judgment around 3.05pm in presence of all the four convicts.
The court fined them Taka 5,000 each, to suffer 10-day jail in default under a section of the Bangladesh Labor Act, 2006. It also fined them Taka 25,000 each, to suffer 15-day behind bars in default.

70pc of Bangladesh economic achievements come in last 15 years

Seventy percent of the economic development or economic growth in independent Bangladesh has been achieved over the last 15 years thanks to the socio-economic and political stability of the Awami League government under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
During this period, the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country increased to $465 billion from $90 billion. Over this 15-year period, a massive transformation has taken place in the country economy, said speakers at a discussion meeting today.

1,151 BGB platoons deployed across the country centering polls

A total of 1,151 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed all over the country, including Dhaka city, to maintain peace and law and order during the upcoming 12th national elections with a view to making it free, fair and peaceful.
The BGB will work as a mobile and striking force to maintain peace and discipline across the country from December 29, 2023 to January 10, 2024 under In Aid to the Civil Power to support the local civil administration, a BGB press release said here today.

India wants to see peaceful election in Bangladesh: MEA

NEW DELHI: Terming election in Bangladesh as a domestic matter of the country, India today made it clear again that the people of Bangladesh will decide their own future through the polls.
"The election is a domestic matter of Bangladesh and we believe it is the people of Bangladesh to decide their own future," said Arindam Bagchi, Spokesperson of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), here.
Responding to a query at the Weekly Media briefing here, Bagchi said that as a close friend and partner of Bangladesh, India is like to see a peaceful election in Bangladesh and it will continue to support Bangladesh vision of a stable, peaceful and a progressive nation.
