Seventeen people were killed and many others injured when a container train and a passenger train collided in Bhairab of Kishoreganj this afternoon.
"Seventeen dead bodies were so far recovered from the wreckage. Casualties could rise as the rescue operation is going on," said Police Super of Kishoreganj Russell Sheikh.
A total of 14 units of the fire service are conducing rescue operation, said Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence media chief Shahjahan Sikder.
The government has deployed three platoons of BGB to assist the rescue operation.
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) counsel Khurshid Alam Khan today said people like BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and Awami League lawmaker Haji Selim, who have been convicted and sentenced to more than two-year jail term, will not be allowed to take part in next general election.
The senior advocate said this following the release of full text of a High Court judgment saying a person sentenced to more than two years jail term will be considered constitutionally incompetent for taking part in election.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today expressed dissatisfaction over the movement of three-wheelers on the country highways and the poor enforcement of the road safety act.
"Although court imposed restrictions on the movement of easy-bikes, Nachiman-Kariman on 22 roads, it has not stopped yet...it has not stopped in most places. The movement of easy-bikes remains stopped when I visit to any place. It starts again when I leave the place," he told a function here.
