51 more aspirants get back candidacy

Fifty-one more aspirants regained their candidature on the second day of appeal hearing as the Election Commission (EC) today disposed of 100 more appeals, taking the total number of regaining candidacy to 107 to contest in January 7 general elections.
Of the 100 appeals, 41 were rejected by the commission while the results of eight appeals will be disclosed later.
Led by Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal, the EC delivered the verdicts after reviewing the appeals at the Nirbachan Bhaban in the city Agargaon area this afternoon.

Onion market to get stabilised within one week: DNCRP chief

Director General of the Directorate of National Consumers Right Protection (DNCRP) AHM Shafiquzzaman today said the onion market is expected to get stabilised within one week.
"The government is working to stabilise the onion market. Newly harvested onions have already started coming into the market," he said while speaking at a reception for the winners in a consumer rights debate at DNCRP conference room in the city, said a press release.
The DG said onion hoarders will be brought under the law and action will be taken against them.

Govt to import 52,000 tonnes of onion

The government has taken initiative to import some 52,000 metric tons of onion from India against the LCs opened earlier in a bid to curtail the price of such an essential item in the local kitchen market.
The Ministry of Commerce has already sent a letter to the Bangladesh High Commission to take the necessary action in this regard.
Besides, all the respective deputy commissioners have been asked to ensure strict monitoring in their respective areas so that onion is being sold at the kitchen market at a rational price.

Oil reserve discovered at well no-10 of Sylhet gas field: Nasrul Hamid

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid today said oil reserve was discovered at the first layer at well no-10 of Sylhet Gas Field.
“The reserve will be able to produce 500-600 barrels oil per day. About 35 barrels of oil flow is available per hour right now,” the state minister came up with the information at a press conference at his ministry conference room.
Nasrul Hamid said that in total, four layers of reserve oil have also been discovered and the oil reserve could be lasted for15 years, adding, “The further test will be determined the extent of the deposit.”
