The much-awaited double line dual gauge railway bridge over the River Jamuna is expected to open in second week of January, 2025. “We have successfully completed construction works of dedicated double line dual gauge railway bridge over the river Jamuna,” Project Director of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Railway Bridge Al Fattah Md Masudur Rahman told BSS here today. He said the 4.8 km long double line dual gauge bridge, which would be the largest dedicated rail bridge of the country, was constructed with two packages including WD-1 and WD-2 with the involvement of Tk. 16,780 crore. “The total cost of the bridge has been estimated of Tk. 16,780.95 crore, of which Tk. 13,000 crore has been earmarked for construction work and over Tk. 3,000 crore for meeting other cost. At least 10 people were injured in a clash between students of Dhaka College and City College at Science Lab area in the capital on Wednesday. Witnesses said the clash started around 3:00 pm and both sides chased each other with sticks and iron rods and threw bricks and stones. At one point, the army perssonel and police attempted to control the situation by chasing the students. The clash disrupted traffic movement in Science Lab area, triggering traffic chaos on roads in the adjacent areas. In a major reshuffle in police administration, the government has appointed former chief of Special Branch of Police Baharul Alam as the new Inspector General of Police(IGP) while Sheikh Sazzad Ali as the new commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). “A major change has come today in the police. Former SB chief Baharul Alam has been given the charge as Inspector General of Police. Sheikh Sazzad Ali has been given the new charge as the DMP commissioner,” said youth and sports adviser Asif Mahmud at a press briefing on Wednesday. Jagannath University will begin its independent admission tests for the 2024-25 academic year from January 31, following its decision to exit the Integrated Cluster Admission system. The university will administer a 100-mark exam, with 48 marks allocated to written questions, 24 marks for multiple-choice questions, and 28 marks based on the results of the SSC and HSC exams.
