Faruque Hassan, the president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), has called upon Carrefour, one of the largest retail chains in Europe, to buy more high value garments from Bangladesh. He made call during a meeting in Hong Kong with Jean Daniel Gatignol, managing director of Global Sourcing at Carrefour, and Alexia Bonnet, Global Sourcing director. The home ministry today asked police to debar political rallies or other such activities from December 18 until the end of the January 7 elections in line with the Election Commission directives. “The Election Commission (EC), within the purview of the Constitution, has mandated the closure of political meetings and gatherings from December 18,” Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told a news briefing at his office. According to the EC instructions, the candidates would be allowed to launch their election campaign from December 18 and from that date until the end of voting, all forms of meetings, rallies, or events that might disrupt the election process or discourage the voters from participating are strictly prohibited. Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister M. Tofazzel Hossain Miah has called for carrying out necessary policy reforms and alignment for fostering the growth of private investment in the country. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Bangladesh government signed a Record of Discussions (RD) for a goal to achieve a low-carbon society. Under this deal, JICA will assist in formulating an effective power distribution plan for Dhaka. The RD was signed by Economic Relations Division (ERD) Additional Secretary AKM Shahabuddin, Power Division Joint Secretary Md Monwar Hasan Khan, and JICA Senior Representative Eiji Yamada on Sunday, said a press release on Tuesday. The plan prioritises the integration of variable renewable energy into the distribution system and suggests a roadmap to achieving a low-carbon society. The distribution master plan involves ensuring a secure and reliable electricity supply system for Dhaka, improving distribution planning, operation and maintenance, and up gradation of distribution facilities. JICA will dispatch international experts who will be working together with DESCO and DPDC for 36 months to formulate the plan. During this time, they will also provide support to improve the institutional capacity of planning, operation, and maintenance of the distribution system.
