Agriculture Minister Dr Md Abdus Shahid today said jute production has risen 33 lakh bales in the last 10 years due to jute-friendly policy taken by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina government. "In 2015, the country annual jute production was 51 lakh bales. But in 2022-2023 fiscal, jutie production was around 84 lakh bales. Of them, around 43 lakh bales jute and jute goods were exported making around 8,000 crore export earnings," he said. Bangladesh has gained the recognition of its four new products as Geographical Indication (GI) products. So far, Bangladesh has got the ownership of a total of 28 GI products, said press release today. The Cabinet today gave final approval to the draft of Village Court (amendment) Act, 2024 enhancing the authority of village courts to fine Taka 3 lakh, raising the amount from existing Taka 75 thousand. The approval came from the weekly Cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Prime Minister Office here. Cabinet Secretary Md Mahbub Hossain briefed reporters at Bangladesh Secretariat this afternoon. Hossain said the government gave the final approval to the draft act last year.
